Mozilla Firefox9 Faster All New Browser Version For PCs and Tab's

Mozilla is laying claim to big performance improvements for Firefox 9, while Firefox for Android goes in for a shave and a haircut as it gets an entirely different look. Both desktop and Android updates are being released today.

Firefox 9 (download for Windows | Mac | Linux | Android) continues the browser's rapid-release development oscillation, where feature enhancements and performance improvements take the lead in alternating months.

The JavaScript improvement called Type Inference, which Mozilla spent more than a year developing, debuts on the PC version of Firefox. The short version is that sites that heavily rely on JavaScript--like Web apps or sites that render games, video, and 3D graphics--will render much, much faster.

What actually changed is this: A feature in Firefox's SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine, Type Inference creates type information by both monitoring the types of values as the program runs and analyzing the program's code. The type information then gets used during "just-in-time" compilation to generate more efficient code, and Mozilla says that major benchmarks like its own Kraken test and Google's V8 show the browser running around 30 percent faster.

On Macs, OS X Lion users will finally see support for two-finger swipe gestures, which sounds more offensive than it is. This simply means that if you've got the latest Mac OS, it'll be easier for you to jump from site to site. The Mac interface has also been tweaked to match the slight visual changes that arrived in Lion, and multiple monitor support in the browser has been improved.

Firefox 9 Android debuts a new way to interact with tabs, and ports the browser's signature bigger Back button to the mobile operating system. These screenshots are from the Aurora release of Firefox 9, so there might be slight changes in the stable version.

Web developers get some attention in Firefox 9, too. The most important developer changes in Firefox 9 are that sites that run Ajax or download large data sets will load faster, and sites can now display content as it's being downloaded thanks to new support to chunking XHR requests. While a technical term, the upshot of chunking XHR requests is that developers can build Web sites to receive large amounts of data faster, and thus making the site itself faster to load. JavaScript can also be used to detect a browser's Do Not Track preference, the option that tells Web sites not to use cookies to track a person's browsing behavior. A longer list of Web developer changes in Firefox 9 is available.

Firefox's new Android tablet interface makes it to the stable version of the browser, and the interface changes are drastic. As I noted when the new look arrived in the Aurora channel in September, the Back button has moved to the location bar, which has been stretched to the right edge of the screen to put Refresh and Bookmark buttons closer at hand. Tabs have been moved to a hidden menu when in portrait mode, and appear much larger than they have before when they're exposed. There have been some performance gains, too, as Mozilla says that people ought to see faster app load times.

This new look won't be around long, though. Mozilla plans to rebuild its app using native Android code, and the mock-ups show even more changes to the interface. One change that does look like it'll stick around is a new sidebar approach to the Awesome Bar, so that when you tap the location bar, tabs for Bookmarks, Open tabs, History, and Sync appear on the side while you scroll in the middle of the window.

There have also been two big improvements to HTML5 support in Firefox for Android. The browser now supports the Input Tag for cameras, which means that developers can build mobile sites and apps that will take pictures and scan bar codes without leaving Firefox. Mozilla created a demo of the Input Tag here.

The second change supports the HTML5 Form Validation API, for automatic form-field validation. Basically, it will be easier to get the browser to validate typed text.

While the future of Firefox for Android lies in abandoning the current interface for the predicted massive speed gains from native Android code, the PC version of Firefox looks to address ongoing add-on compatibility issues, and give the browser a more seamless automatic update experience.

Nokia Lumia 800 first Windows Phone handset ReView!

The Nokia Lumia 800 is the first Windows Phone handset to spring from the Microsoft / Nokia tie-up announced in February, and we've got our hands on an early sample to check it out. The Nokia Lumia 800 shares its exterior styling with the previously substantially less hyped Nokia N9, a Meego-based smartphone, although the screen size is reduced from 3.9" (854x480 pixels) to 3.7" (800x480 pixels) to conform to the Windows Phone spec list. The CPU, however, increases from the 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 to the 1.4GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon/Scorpion which certainly helps add snap to the Windows Phone Mango OS.

The Nokia Lumia 800, although being the more expensive of the two Nokia Windows Phone offerings (the other being the budget Nokia Lumia 710) shares the Nokia N9's 16-bit AMOLED ClearBlack display whereas the Nokia Lumia 710 sports a 24-bit ClearBlack TFT.

This being said, even though the colour depth is theoretically deeper than in the Nokia Lumia 710, AMOLED screens are seen as better than the older TFT technology due to the more vivid colours and better contrast ratios.

SutiSecure Smart Card/ Biometric Authentication

Sutisoft’s SECURED BioPass product provides fingerprint / Smartcard based access control to the enterprise IT infrastructure. By combining the Smartcard based authentication, biometric identity verification technologies and the best-in-class extraction/matching techniques, SECURED BioPass provides a rock solid access control mechanism for the enterprise IT infrastructure. Before a user can connect to the enterprise network, he needs to authenticated be authenticated either by using Smartcards or by the SECURED BioPass Server.

In a SECURED BioPass enabled enterprise, when users want to login to the system, they need to select the type of authentication: Smartcard Authentication or Biometric Authentication. On selecting Smartcard Authentication, users’ needs to insert the smartcard in the reader, enter the PIN to authenticate themselves. Each user’s PIN and User Details are matched with the same stored in the smartcard. In case of a mismatch, the user is denied access to the system and hence the enterprise infrastructure. In case of a successful match, the user login is permitted. From this point onwards, user experience is identical to their everyday experience with the system.

On selecting Biometric Authentication, users need to provide their user-id and fingerprints. Each user’s fingerprint is matched against his registered fingerprints stored in the server. In case of a mismatch, the user is denied access to the system and hence the enterprise infrastructure. In case of a successful match, the user login is permitted. From this point onwards, user experience is identical to their everyday experience with the system.

White Galaxy S II Andriod from Samsung And T-Mobile

People always been something of a fans (a proponent, even) of white phones. Back in another life when mobile manufacturers on their phone designs, it was always one of the first questions would Arise “This is great! Can They make it in white?”

Back then, everybody acted like It was crazy. “White is too hard to keep clean!” they’d assure. “The white bezel makes the black screen look smaller!” they’d say. These days, of course, white phones are all the rage.

Sometime before the holidays, another flagship phone is now set to hop on the big list of handsets with snowy variants: the Samsung Galaxy S II.

News of the hue-less model comes straight from Samsung themselves, though the announcement lacks details beyond its launch window of “in time for the holidays”.

The announcement was made in partnership with T-Mobile, and only confirms that T-Mobile will be getting the white model. This is particularly interesting, as pictures of an identical white variant leaked out just days ago… but for AT&T. No official word yet from AT&T on when they might get it, but I’d guess that “in time for the holidays” window is the same across the board.

Motorola Details European Retail Push for Xoom Tablet

Motorola, attempting to expand its brand among European customers, today announced retail partners that will carry its upcoming Android-based Xoom tablet.

Among those partners in the U.K. are The Carphone Warehouse and its ally Best Buy, along with Dixons Retail, with its Currys and PC World chains. In addition, Deutsche Telekom will carry it in "selected markets," Motorola announced at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona.

The Xoom, with a 10.1-inch display, will mark the debut of the upcoming version 3.0 "Honeycomb" edition of Google's Android operating system, which is tailored for tablets. It's likely to be the most serious rival to the dominant Apple iPad. Samsung's smaller 7-inch Galaxy Tab is already on the market but comes with an earlier version of Android.

HTC Wins Device Manufacturer of the Year Award

HTC

This company has built its market presence from nowhere, with fresh branding and marketing and a strong portfolio of devices across many platforms. In particular, it has proven an exceptionally popular and enduring phone manufacturer. With great communication and good customer service, this is a well-deserved award.

Apple's iPhone 4 Wins Best Mobile Device Award

BARCELONA, Spain--A host of hot new Android phones from Samsung, LG Electronics, HTC, Sony Ericsson made their debut at Mobile World Congress 2011 here this week, but it was the relatively venerable iPhone 4 from Apple that was named the show's best mobile device.

The iPhone 4 is months old and early on suffered notable reception problems. Its maker didn't even come to the show. But the influence of Apple, reaching all the way from Silicon Valley to this cosmopolitain event, was clear.

The iPhone 4 was lauded by judges for its "great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone 4 built on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smartphones," according to a Spanish-language Apple forum site.

Problems with the antenna in the iPhone 4 could not be solved with a software fix and the company told angry customers they would have to buy a special case to remedy the situation. Meanwhile, Apple has been sued by users of iPhone 3G and 3GS phones who say that the iOS 4 operating system broke their phones. The antenna problem prompted Consumer Reports to decline to recommend the phone.

It's not clear who picked up the award for Apple at the awards ceremony this week, given that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company declines to participate in the trade show, as is also the case with the Consumer Electronics Show and now even Macworld. (There were no press passes for the Mobile World Congress awards show.)

Last year, the HTC Hero won the best mobile device award.

This time around, HTC won the award for device manufacturer of the year, and the best app overall and best app for the iPhone was the game Angry Birds, which has sales of more than 50 million apps. Google Maps was named the best Android app.
